Camp Kick Off….

15 08 2016

We have welcomed our group of enterprising teenagers in to the Rubicon centre here on the campus of Cork Institute of Technology.  The camp takes place in the centre of the busy innovation centre that houses over 60 entrepreneurs who are busy working on their businesses.  This allows the participants to become immersed in the bustling, innovative environment.

WiFi has been connected, there are Pokemon hunts at lunch break and plenty of discussions on what businesses to start…It’s going to be an eventful week!!

Getting down to Work!

21 08 2014

After a session on getting to know their market and learning about the different methods of market research, the groups started analysing the markets for their own ideas. Learning about their competition,  their unique selling points and a pricing strategy allows the team to understand where to position themselves in the market to maximise their chances of success.

With a bit of insight in to importance of developing an on-line presence for the business, the groups thought about how they would communicate on-line and the best way to promote on these channels to appeal to their target market.

With all of the work that has been completed, all that’s left tomorrow is adding the final touches and practice, practice, practice before their final pitch.

Dog Day Media

20 08 2014

Alex Musgrave from Dog Day Media welcomed the teenagers to camp today with an uplifting talk on his many ventures as an enthusiastic teen entrepreneur.  All of his experiences along the way offered many valuable lessons and helped to develop his entrepreneurial skills, whether a failed venture or not!!

After the initial motivational chat about the merits of being an entrepreneur, Alex showcased a number of their modern and fun videos from their impressive list of clients.

I think there are a few more people interested in the world of multimedia after the morning.

Skittles and Marshmallows

18 08 2014

No it wasn’t snack time, it was team building time for each of the 5 groups.  If there is a better way to conduct a team-building session then I haven’t learned about it yet!

The skittles game allowed the individuals to share various bits of information about  themselves in a fun and ultimately delicious way.  Then came the competitive part!, each group were given materials to build a spaghetti tower to support their marshmallow.  An extra large countdown clock pressurised the group to be very aware of their time management with planning, building and taping getting more frantic as the clock ticked down.

I think everyone picked up a lesson or two from the activity, even if one of those lessons was self control and NOT to eat the materials!!! No marshmallows were harmed during this activity, although they did seem to vanish afterwards…

Let’s Get Started!!

We kicked off an exciting week here in CIT with an introduction and discussion in to the world of entrepreneurship.  There’s no better place for it with the groups meeting and a variety of innovative entrepreneurs at various stages throughout the day than the Rubicon Centre, even banging in to a few while on the campus tour!!!

The groups listened to an overview of the necessary components in starting a business, factors that where then brought to life by one of the New Frontiers entrepreneurs, Paul Shannon, telling his story and showcasing his business idea, the fact that it was game based and motion sensitive added a bit of fun to the demonstration.

With many more entrepreneurial stories throughout the week it is going to be hard to not get in to the entrepreneurial spirit.
